Ten European partners of GREENSPIRE met in Pontevedra, Galicia, to launch a four-year project that will deliver harmonized, science-based methodologies for assessing the environmental impact of home textiles and polyurethane foam products.
The ecological transition of the European economy faces a concrete obstacle: the absence of common, scientifically validated rules for measuring the environmental impact of everyday products. Household textiles – such in mattresses and sofas – are prima examples of product categories that currently lack these standards.
The figures underline the urgency of the challenge. The textile sector generates 355 Kg of CO2 equivalent per person per year, making in the fourth most polluting consumer sector in Europe, while PU foams produce approximately 675,000 tonnes of waste annually. Both sectors currently recycle less than 6% of their materials on a global scale.
A Four-Year Mission for a Circular Economy
GREENSPIRE has been launched to address this gap. Funded by Horizon Europe and coordinated by the Spanish consultancy Contactica, the project brings together ten partners from six European countries to develop two Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs) over the next four years: one for home textiles and one for polyurethane foams.
These rules will enable any company to calculate, compare and communicate the environmental impact of its products in a standardized and transparent manner, ensuring credible and comparable sustainability claims across the sector.
Beyond Methodology: Tools for Real-World Adoption
Alongside the PEFCRs, the consortium will develop a comprehensive set of resources designed to support their practical uptake:
- Sector-specific lifecycle datasets, built from real data.
- A free digital assessment platform, tailored to the needs of SMEs.
- An Engagement & Information Centre (E&I Centre), translating technical results into accessible information for professionals and consumers alike.
- An Ecodesign Optimization Framework (EDO Framework), based on evolutionary algorithms, to help industry identify the most sustainable design scenarios.
What sets GREENSPIRE apart from other initiatives is its strong commitment to accessibility. Several of these tools will be made freely available, and the project has been designed to reduce the time and cost of carrying out an environmental footprint assessment by between 30% and 50%.
Grounded in Industrial Reality
A distinctive feature of the project is its reliance on primary data supplied directly by industry. Textile manufacturers and PU foam producers within the consortium are contributing real production data, ensuring that the future PEFCRs genuinely reflect the industrial reality of these sectors across Europe.
This kickoff meeting in Pontevedra marks the beginning of four years of joint work, which will culminate in 2030 with the delivery of the PEFCRs to the European Commission for official validation, the launch of the GREENSPIRE Toolbox platform, and the first GREENSPIRE competition rewarding the most sustainable product in each category.
Expected Impact
GREENSPIRE is set to directly benefit companies operating in the home textiles and PU foam sectors across Europe. Indirectly, its results are expected to reach more than 400 million European citizens who use products from these categories on a daily basis, according to data provided by Eurostat
